MAT in a Recovery Environment

Andrew C. Stone, MD, MPH

Session Description:

At the end of this lecture, participants will be able to integrate the concepts of recovery with the medications used in the treatment of addiction for those who primarily use opioids. Participants will recognize biases in our language that may alter patients' perceptions of their own recovery path and increase stigma, and begin to identify ways to encourage patients to participate more fully in their own recovery.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the terms: Medication Assisted Treatment; Medication Assisted Recovery and Medication As Treatment and how they apply to those who have the disease Addiction involving opioids

  • Identify how the concept of recovery can be applied in the context of those receiving medication commonly used in treatment of those with Addiction

  • Examine the perceived conflicts in the Addiction Medicine field between "recovery" and "harm reduction" and reframe these concepts as part of a "patient centered" continuum
